A casual spa visit for one Oregon woman turned into a heated nightmare that she says left her with personal injuries.
The woman is in the midst of civil litigation against an Oregon company that she says acted negligently. The woman was at the Northeast Portland business in October 2009 when she says she fell asleep in one of their tanning beds. She was asleep for about two and a half hours and sustained first and second degree burns to body, according to a law suit filed in Multnomah County Circuit Court. She says also faces a future increased risk of skin cancer and is dealing with permanent scars and discolored skin.
The lawsuit, filed on Oct. 5, claims employees at the business failed to set off alarms and wake up the woman. She said they should have turned the tanning bed off in “a reasonable time.”
Besides injuries to her skin, the woman says the incident led to ultraviolet eye damage, as well as dizziness, headaches and nausea.
According to a news report, the woman is suing the company for $500,000. That money is intended to cover medical expenses and non-economic damages.
The news report says the business is owned by a woman who says she was out of town when the alleged incident happened involving her employees. The tanning part of that business has since closed, according to the report. The business owner told reporters that while something did go wrong with the timers in the tanning bed used by the woman, she is the only one to have experienced that kind of problem.
